How to pay your Nanny

Parenting
Childcare

Choosing the best method to pay your Nanny can be challenging. Not only do you want to do what is best for you and your Nanny, you must also consider how you’re going to stay on top of it. How will you pay them? Will you provide payment once a week? Twice a month? Once a month? Then there’s Superannuation, Insurance and other legal requirements! These are the sort of questions you should be asking yourself to determine whether or not you are able to self-manage your Nanny’s payroll. If you’re unsure about managing your nanny’s payroll yourself, there is always the option of outsourcing the payroll process and responsibilities.

We’ve outlined the three most popular payroll options available when it comes to hiring a permanent Nanny.

Self-Manage

Yes, you can handle the Nanny payroll process on your own but you need to understand your obligations as an employer. These include providing your Nanny with an employment contract and meeting other legislative requirements. In addition to a minimum wage, you will also need to make arrangements for regular superannuation payments, as well as organising worker’s compensation insurance and ‘pay as you go’ tax instalments.

Self-managing is a viable option if you have time, are familiar with payroll basics and are confident you can keep up with changing legislation.

Cash in hand

It is not uncommon for your Nanny to ask for cash in hand and often it seems like the “easy” option.

But did you know it is illegal under Australian law to employ a Nanny on a cash-in-hand basis? If you’re considering doing it on the hush-hush we would highly recommend you think again! Not only does it deprive a Nanny of their rights but it also leaves you wide open for other issues such as a lack of liability insurance should an injury occur or lack of legal recourse if terms of the employment contract are broken.

Outsourcing

Over time the process of self-managing can get very complicated and time consuming which is why many parents prefer to outsource to a payroll company who can handle it for them.

Outsourcing takes the stress and time pressure out of paying your permanent Nanny. This is by far the most hassle-free option as the agency can handle all aspects of recruiting a suitable Nanny along with all the ongoing paperwork such as contracts, employment forms etc. It is also the most reliable – you know all your obligations are being met, and you are not liable for any nasty surprises.

We are proud partners with NannyPay who are on hand to support you in setting up your nanny to be employed. Domestic payroll obligations can be hard to navigate and NannyPay will help you set up a fortnight direct debit from your account to then pay your nanny’s wage, super and tax plus much more.

If you choose to use NannyPay to help you with your payroll, you will receive 50% off their sign-up fees if you advise them that we at Little Lovelies have referred you. You can contact NannyPay at payroll@nannypay.com.au or find more information at www.nannypay.com.au

Testimonals

Little Lovelies was absolutely wonderful in helping us find a nanny for our 6 month old twin girls to work with us on a permanent basis. Louise at the agency was a pleasure to work with and was so accommodating of us when our needs changed in the middle of our search. All the candidates were thoughtfully chosen, and we appreciated that the agency was so professional and proactive; from the initial vetting and providing a helpful summary of each candidate with their CV to managing communication and providing helpful resources for our family and nanny. We have had such a positive experience and have no hesitation in recommending Little Lovelies to families and nannies alike.

Very smooth booking experience from start to finish. Prompt communication from the agency and nanny. Tess was lovely – the kids warmed to her instantly and when we got home the toys and kitchen were cleaned, which was a lovely surprise. Will definitely be booking through Little Lovelies if we need a nanny again!

Little Lovelies was fantastic to work with. We needed a nanny to join our family on a permanent basis. Jodie quickly found a fantastic nanny Daisy to look after our little one. The care taken with vetting the babysitters was really great, and the whole process was seamless. I'd definitely suggest using their services if you are looking for quality care. Neel and Pat.

After our permanent nanny unexpectedly didn't return from her overseas holiday, we were scrambling for a casual nanny to fill in our fluctuating work schedule. Jacqui was accommodating and came back to us with some good options. Sashi was a very experienced and flexible nanny, and the kids (2yo and 3.5yo) were immediately comfortable around her. We're happy customers – will return.

Little Lovelies is fantastic! I have used the service many times and every babysitter and nanny have been excellent. I am always very comfortable leaving my daughter and always impressed at how quickly Jacqui can find someone even with very little notice. A very happy customer.

We used Little Lovelies while on holiday in Sydney. Our sitter was on time, professional and very caring with our 5 year old. She even cleaned the kitchen, a nice surprise to return home to!

Little lovelies were brilliant. We had Jana look after our 6 week old and managed to go on a much needed date night as a result. I was petrified to leave our little one for the first time, but having a semi CV in my inbox and having Jana reach out beforehand really helped.
